It’s no surprise that along with working on the Last Res0rt online comic, I also do my own web design for the lastres0rt.com website.
Last Res0rt has one feature rarely found on webcomics — Responsive Web Design that allows the site to be read on any modern device from the smartphone on up.
Why responsive web design?
- Last Res0rt is a great comic, yes, but it’s still just content. User expectations require an app to perform a service, not just be a content portal.
- Native application development and maintenance across several mobile OS’s (iOS, Android, and possibly Windows Mobile) is a tall order for a single individual — especially if, again, all it’s doing is serving as a mobile website equivalent.
- A separate mobile website requires the means to detect mobile devices and “kick” them over to a site that may not possess all the same features as the full site. Integration into the full site means there’s no loss in content.
- Responsive web design adds only slightly more overhead to the overall site design and virtually nothing in additional maintenance — because it IS the same website, it gets updated at the same time, uses all the same resources, and adapts to any new device with a modern browser.
